Storryteller from Japan, Yoko Kami |
For the first time in Malaysia, story tellers from US, UK, Japan,
India, Thailand and Singapore came together for the festival in
Penang to tell their stories to children. The Consulate-General
of Japan invited Ms. Yoko Kami as the storyteller for the Japanese
Folk Story tent. Ms. Kami told two popular Japanese folk stories,
“A Fisherman Called Urashima Taro” (Urashima Taro Si Nelayan) and
“Flower Blossoming Old Man” (Bunga Mekar Berkembang Dek Sentuhan
Orang Tua). She showed her Malay language skills by narrating the
two stories in fluent Bahasa Malaysia.
PINKS Festival created an opportunity for the entire family to enjoy an educational outdoor activity together and at the same time to be mesmerized by lively stories that
were told by local and international storytellers. This activity aimed at promoting better understanding among people with different cultures through the sharing of stories.
There were also other activities such as fairy tale fashion parade, storytelling by children and mobile library station.
PINKS Festival was organized by Penang Education Council and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and co-organized by Majilis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang (MPPP) and Penang State
Library. The Festival was also supported by the Penang State Government, Penang Preschool Association, Consulate-General of Japan, Royal Thai Consulate, British Council,
and many others.
