The 21st Penang Bon Odori Festival 2017
     
    The 21st Penang Bon Odori Festival was held at Queensbay Mall Outdoor car park, Penang.
This year, there were more than 30,000 visitors attended the festival. The festival highlights included D.D.M. Company (Yosakoi dance group) and Kinjo-Ryu Taisho Koto group from Japan. There were about 60 food stall, craft and games booths at the event. This year, Toyohashi City Economic Council joined in the food stall by selling Han-Pen (Japanese fish cake) to the visitors.

    This year, the Penang Bon Odori Festival coincided with the 60th Anniversary of the Establishment of Malaysia-Japan Diplomatic Relations. The festival serves to further strengthen ties between Malaysia and Japan and strengthen the people-to-people relations.

    The Bon Odori Festival in Penang is co-organized by Penang State Government, Consulate-General of Japan in Penang, Malaysian Japanese Society, Penang Japanese Association, Penang Japanese Language Society, Japan Graduates’ Association of Malaysia-Northern Branch, and Alumni of Overseas Technical Scholarships.

As this year also marks the 60th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relation between Japan and Malaysia, a day before the Penang Bon Odori Festvial, The Consulate-general of Japan took this opportunity to invite the two performance groups from Japan namely DDM Company and Kinjo Ryu Taisho Koto to perform in SMJK Phor Tay, Penang to commemorate this bilateral anniversary.  This Cultural Exchange Concert was held on on 14th July and it is aimed to promote mutual understanding and strengthen friendship between Penang and Japan through cultural exchange. In return, the students from SMJK Phor Tay also performed three items as part of the cultural exchange program. There were more than 1000 students attended the concert.
