School Caravan : Universiti Teknologi MARA, Penang.

(Penang, Mar 6) 33 Diploma students from School of Tourism Management, Univerisiti Teknologi MARA, Penang joined the School Caravan at the Consulate-General of Japan for the first time. They were accompanied by their Lecturer, Mdm. Johanna.

The Japanese Cultural Session included Furisode Demonstration and Ikebana Demonstration.

The programme on that day started with Furisode Demonstration.

Furisode is a style of Kimono distinguishable by its long sleeve and it is worn by unmarried women in Japan. The furisode is generally worn in formal social occasions such as weddings and Coming-of-Age Day.

Furisode Demonstration Session was conducted by Ms. Imura and Ms. Yamazaki. The session began with a hairdo by Ms. Imura while Ms. Yamazaki was the narrator during the demonstration.

The programme was then followed by the Ikebana Demonstration.

Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. It is creative expression within living branches, leaves, grasses, and blossoms. Ikebana portrays interaction between the vase, the branches and the flowers creating the final harmony.

The session was demonstrated by Ms. Lim Poh Bee, founder of Ohara Floral Art Society in Penang. She arranged two Ikebana and there was a Q & A session after the demonstration.

A presentation on “Introduction to Japan" was held after the demonstration. Students enjoyed themselves as they had learned two Japanese Culture in this event. At the end of the programme, a letter of thanks and a token of appreciation was presented to the Consulate-General of Japan.

The Consulate-General of Japan conducts school caravan from time to time upon request from schools, introducing and promoting mutual understanding of Japanese language, custom, culture and tradition to Malaysian students.
