Japanese Festival at SMJK (C) Phor Tay

(Penang, 10th Mar ) With the aim to promote Japanese culture to the local Malaysian students, the Malaysian Japanese Society (MJS) organized a Japanese Festival at SMJK (C) Phor Tay with the support from Consulate-General of Japan in Penang. This event was held at SMJK(C) Phor Tay at Bayan Lepas for the first time.

There were hundreds of students participated in this festival. The activities held included Ikebana (華道Japanese flower arrangement) demonstration, Furoshiki (風呂敷Japanese wrapping cloth) workshop , Origami bookmark workshop, Yukata-Try on, Japanese Pottery workshop, Kyudo (弓道 Japanese Archery) workshop , Origami Tsuru (摺紙紙鶴 Japanese paper crane folding) Workshop and Presentation of Japanese Cultures and tourism.

Furoshiki (風呂敷) originated from Japan during the mid-Nara Era. In order to promote caring for the environment and to reduce the use of plastic bags, the Japanese government has been promoting the use of Furoshiki as it can be used for gift wrapping and grocery shopping.

Kyudo (弓道), which literally means The Way of the Bow, originated from Japan ancient archery skills by the Samurai. According to the Nippon Kyudo Federation the supreme goal of kyudo is the state of truth(真), goodness (善) and beauty (美).

The Japanese Language class in SMJK (c) Phor Tay started since 2014. There are over 30 students enrolled the Japanese language course this year.

Consulate-General of Japan conducts Japanese cultural events and school caravan from time to time upon request of schools, introducing and promoting mutual understanding in terms of Japanese language, custom, and cultural traditions among Malaysian students.
