School Caravan: Japanese Tea Ceremony Workshop at USM, Penang
(Penang, May 10) The Japanese Language Society from University Science Malaysia, Penang campus held a Japanese Tea Ceremony Workshop with the support of the Consulate-General of Japan. The tea ceremony was demonstrated by Nadeshiko Tea Ceremony Group lead by Master Sumiish. The manner of preparing powered green tea may be influenced by various styles and techniques, depending on the practices of the various schools. Nadeshiko group practices Urasenke style (裏千家) sado which is the largest tradition of Chado both in Japan and around the world.

During the worshkop , Master Sumiishi explained to the students the correct way of holding the tea bowl and drinking the tea served.
The students were also taught and introduced to various “temae”( procedure) in making, serving , receiving and drinking the tea. Students were encouraged to play different role as servers and guests and to enjoy the quiet pleasures of sharing a bowl of tea with others.
