Japanese Culture Caravan at SMK Bukit Jambul

The Consulate-General of Japan, Penang was invited by Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bukit Jambul (SMKBJ) to promote the Japanese culture among their students in conjunction with the school’s Open Day on August 7, 2010. SMKBJ had recently started Japanese language classes for their student and took the opportunity to hold this event to introduce the Japanese culture to their students.

The activities that were held on that day included origami demonstration, a mini bell concert and Yukata trying session. Ms. Yamamura, an active Japanese volunteer brought her display materials for the event. Her art craft display caught much attention from the visitors as all her craft works were made from recycled materials. Ms. Yamamura and some students also performed a mini bell concert for the visitors. The visitors enjoyed listening to the chiming of the bells in harmony with the melody of the keyboard played by Ms. Yamamura. The visitors also managed to try on origami folding.

Students had the chance to try on the Yukata during the event with the help from Yukata dressers, Ms. Okamoto and Ms. Sato. Many students were eager to wear the Japanese traditional attire and most of them took pictures of themselves wearing the Yukata. The students and visitors enjoyed themselves very much and it was a great opportunity for them to learn more about the Japanese culture.
