Japanese Star Festival 2010

Japanese Star Festival was held on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at the Library Hall of Information and Cultural Section, Consulate-General of Japan. Students of St. Xavier’s Institution’s Tourism Club were invited to celebrate the festival. The event started with a welcoming speech by the Vice-Consul, Ms. Eriko Nishizawa and followed by a short video presentation on Japanese children’s life and culture. The students were also given a brief explanation on Japanese Star Festival.

The students then wrote their wishes on strips of coloured paper or known as Tanzaku and hung them on the bamboo tree, decorated with colourful ornaments. They were also taught how to make an origami sumo wrestler and shuriken and played with the origami sumo wrestler that they made at the origami sumo competition. The students also presented a plaque to Ms. Nishizawa as a token of appreciation.

Japanese Star Festival known as Tanabata Festival (七夕) in Japanese is celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh month every year in Japan. The festival traces its origins to a legend that Hikoboshi (Altair Star) and Orihime (Vega Star), lovers separated by the Milky Way who are allowed to meet just once a year-on the seventh day of the seventh month.
