Interview with the Winner of the 27th National Level Japanese
Speech Contest 2011
Ms. Yap Kah Kay, the winner of the recent 27th National Level Japanese
Speech Contest 2011 and her Japanese language teacher, Mr. Foong
Kok Wah were invited to the official residence of the Consul-General
to congratulate her for winning the contest. A press conference
and an interview session were held at the same time.
Ms. Yap, a Senior Middle Three student from Chung Ling Private
High School won the contest with her speech title “My Experience
in Studying Japanese Language” which was held in Kuala Lumpur
in September. Ms. Yap studied Japanese language for three years
at the Penang Japanese Language Society under the guidance by her
Japanese language teacher, Mr. Foong. During the interview, she
said that her great interest in Japanese animation since childhood
motivated her to take up Japanese language and hoped to be able
to further her studies in Japan, majoring in Japanese Language.

Mr. Tetsuro Kai, the Consul-General highly praised Ms. Yap, complimenting that she spoke Japanese
very well with the same level of language competency as a native speaker although she had only
learned Japanese language for about three years. Mr. Foong added that Ms. Yap also obtained
impressively good results in her Japanese Language Proficiency Test.
The annual speech contest is organized by the Embassy of Japan in Malaysia, Japan Foundation
Kuala Lumpur and other related organizations. This Japanese speech contest is also held in other
states such as Penang, Perak, Kuala Lumpur and Sabah. The winners from each state are selected to
compete in the national level in Kuala Lumpur with the other contestants.
