| Opening Ceremony of Passage to the Future: Art from a New Generation in JapanThe opening ceremony for the "Passage to the Future: Art from a New 
              Generation in Japan” exhibition was held at Penang State Art Gallery 
              on Saturday, 8th January 2011.  The event started off with a welcoming speech by Madam Rokiah Ismail, 
			   Committee Member of the Penang State Art Gallery followed by a speech 
			   by Mr. Shoichi Toyoda, Director of the Japan Foundation at Kuala Lumpur 
			   and Ar. Ms. Hajah Patahiyah Bt. Ismail, President of the Penang City Council. 
			   The opening ceremony was also attended by Mr. Tetsuro Kai, Consul-General of Japan.  The exhibition, “Passage to the Future: Art from a New Generation in Japan,” 
			   focuses on a collection of artworks produced in Japan in early 21st century. The 
			   selection showcases 42 art works such as paintings, sculptures, installations, 
			   photographs, and videos by 11 young Japanese artists namely Atsushi Fukui, 
			   Satoshi Hirose, Maywa Denki, Tomoyasu Murata, Tetsuya Nakamura, Masafumi Sanai, 
			   Katsuhiro Saiki, Yoshihiro Suda, Tabaimo, Nobuyuki Takahashi, and Miyuki Yokomizo.  The artworks reflect the artistes’ perception and feelings on the aspects of 
			   everyday life. The eleven artists featured in this exhibition take their subject matter 
			   from their immediate surroundings and make art that strongly reflects their own personal 
			   reality. Through this exhibition visitors can gain insight into the nature of contemporary Japanese art.  “Passage to the Future: Art from a New Generation in Japan” is organized by the Japan Foundation, 
			   the Embassy of Japan, Consulate-General of Japan in Penang, Penang State Museum Board and Muzium & Galeri 
			   Tuanku Fauziah (Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang). Admission is free.  The exhibition is open to 
			   the public from 7 – 23 January 2011 at Bangunan No. 57, Macalister Road, Penang.
