Japanese Culture Workshop at School of the Arts ,USM

(Penang, Oct 30) The Consulate-General of Japan and USM’s School of Languages, Literacies and Translation and School of the Arts, jointly organized a Japanese Culture Workshop at USM Penang. The workshop was conducted by a Japanese traditional culture group "Wa-group Kizuna" from Japan. 'Wa(和)' means ' Peace and Harmony', while  Kizuna(絆) means ' bondage of friendship'.

The aim of this workshop is to deepen the relationship and unity between Japanese and Malaysian through cultural exchange. Concurrently held were workshops of Ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement), Japanese traditional confectionery, Japanese traditional toys, Kimono demonstration and Japanese traditional dance.

Maiko dance was one of the highlight. The word Maiko literally translates to "dancing child" (mai = dance, ko = child), but is referred to as "dancing girl". A Maiko is an apprentice Geisha who undergo a period of hard training that generally takes 5 years, where she learns the various "gei" (arts) such as dancing, singing, music instruments, tea ceremony, etc. before she becomes a Geisha.

At the end of the workshop, students from School of the Arts performed a famous local folk song “Rasa Sayang” and handed over souvenirs to members of Wa-Group Kizuna.
