Japanese and Chinese Tea Art Culture Exchange and Demonstration

(Penang, Aug 26) A Japanese and Chinese Tea Art Culture Exchange and Demonstration was first time held in Penang at Penang Caring Society Complex. The Japanese and Chinese Tea ceremonies were conducted by the Penang Tea Culture Association and The Class of Tea Circle Nadeshiko respectively.

This event was organized by Malaysian-Japanese Society and supported by the Consulate-General of Japan to promote mutual understanding between Malaysian and Japanese as well as to promote tea art culture. The setting of the tea ceremony venue was decorated into two sections. Members of the public observed two settings of Chinese and Japanese tea ceremonies in the same room. They were were served with Japanese tea prepared by tea masters and learned the Japanese and Chinese tea making under the free guidance of tea masters. Japanese tea art which is also called "Chado" , is one of the very special etiquette in receiving guests in Japanese culture. It has a long history which stresses on manners and attitude.

Tea masters from Nadeshiko explained to the participants the history and custom of tea art and the implications of the ceremony, the four principles of wa-kei-sei-jaku, or harmony, respect, purity and tranquility, act as the "motto" of the study of the tea ceremony.
Japanese Tea Ceremony has to be done under a solemn atmosphere and liturgy.
 
Four tea masters of Penang Tea Art Culture Association conducted the Chinese tea making ceremony using antique tea sets and Pu Er tea leaves. YB Loh Heng Kiang, who is also the president of Penang Tea Culture Association attended the ceremony.
