Japanese Culture School Caravan 2011

A Japanese Culture School Caravan was held on September 30 at the Library Hall of Information and Cultural Section, Consulate-General of Japan. Students of the Japanese language course at Bukit Mertajam High School were invited. A welcoming speech by Ms. Eriko Nishizawa, Vice-Consul was followed by a specially prepared self-introduction by the students using Japanese language.

Then the students watched a short video presentation regarding the culture of Japan. The students were also given a brief explanation about Japanese tradition to celebrate Respect-for-the-Aged Day and Autumnal Equinox Day and festivals during autumn especially for the month of September. Later the students challenged to make an origami dragonfly.

This year’s culture caravan was featured by an Ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement) workshop. Mrs. Saito, an Ikebana instructor taught the students how to arrange simple Ikebana, explaining the different types of arrangement of Ikebana and the utensils for Ikebana. She also introduced the names of the flowers during the demonstration.

All the students enjoyed making their own Ikebana with the instructor’s guidance and brought back their own works home as souvenir. A representative student from the school presented Ms. Nishizawa a gift as a token of appreciation for inviting them to the culture caravan.
