Consul-General, Mr. Ryuji Noda witnessed the signing ceremony for JICA Partnership Programme on 18 March 2014 at City Bayview Hotel.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will implement an approximately JPY50 million (an approximately RM1.6 million) non-revenue water (NRW) reduction project for Malaysia with Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang Sdn Bhd (PBAPP) from January 2014 to November 2016. In 2012, PBAPP recorded a NRW percentage of 17.6% for Penang as compared to the national average of 36.4%.
The aim of this project is for PBAPP to acquire the latest Japanese technology in NRW management in terms of training and technology transfer to further reduce water loss in Penang and establish the training centre for NRW at PBAPP and train the staff of PBAPP as trainers to be able to conduct NRW reduction training nationwide at PBAPP. Tokyo Suido Services (TSS) has been appointed to work directly with PBAPP on the project. TSS has helped Tokyo Metropolitan Government to achieve a 3.3% NRW.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng hoped that this project would not only help to prevent water leakages but to increase water supply in Penang and all the other states.
