Meeting with Representatives of the Penang Green Council, Japanese Companies and Universities

On October 8th, Mr. Shinya Machida, Consul-General of Japan in Penang, received a visit from representatives of the Penang Green Council (PGC), including Ms. Josephine Tan, Chief Executive Officer, as well as representatives of Kanadevia Corporation, Brainstorm HR, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Shibaura Institute of Technology. They exchanged views on the current situation and challenges of waste management in Penang and cooperation between Japan and Malaysia in the environmental sector.
During the meeting, they discussed a wide range of issues related to building a sustainable society, including waste segregation, collection and treatment, recycling, environmental education and public awareness. They also exchanged views on the importance of combining Japanese companies’ technologies and experience gained both domestically and internationally with the expertise of Malaysian universities and research institutions to explore practical solutions suited to local conditions in Penang.
The visitors also briefed Mr. Machida on a workshop on integrated waste management scheduled to be held in Penang in January 2027. The workshop aims to bring together representatives of the state government, local authorities, companies, universities and research institutions to share challenges and explore opportunities for concrete cooperation, drawing on technologies and experience from Japan and other countries. The participants expressed their expectations for further cooperation in the environmental sector through such collaboration among government, industry and academia.
The Consulate-General of Japan in Penang will continue to strengthen its engagement with PGC and other local organizations and support efforts to apply Japanese technologies and expertise to addressing local challenges, thereby contributing to the further development of Japan-Malaysia cooperation in the environmental sector.
