On October 7th, a group of students from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) visited the Consulate-General of Japan in Penang. The visit was part of a program titled "Understanding Diplomatic Relations: Academic Visit to Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia Consulate Offices," organized by the university’s International Affairs Society.

Mr. Shinya Machida, Consul-General of Japan in Penang, provided an overview of Japan’s foreign policy and Malaysia’s Look East Policy, industrial development in Penang and the expansion of Japanese companies into the state, Malaysia’s multicultural society, the friendly relations between Japan and Malaysia based on shared values, cultural and educational exchanges, and the role of the Consulate-General, from three perspectives: the international situation, geographical conditions, and human capital. These topics were followed by a lively and interactive exchange of views with the participants.

The Consulate-General of Japan will continue to strengthen its engagement with UUM and its students, support exchanges among universities and students in Japan and Malaysia, and promote greater mutual understanding and friendship between the younger generations of the two countries.
