Consul-General Attends the 151st Anniversary Dinner of the Penang Chinese Town Hall

On September 26th, Mr. Shinya Machida, Consul-General of Japan in Penang, attended a dinner commemorating the 151st anniversary of the Penang Chinese Town Hall, the 45th anniversary of its Youth Section and the 41st anniversary of its Women’s Section in George Town. The dinner was attended by the Right Honourable Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang; the Honourable Steven Sim, Minister of Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development; the Honourable Lim Hui Ying, Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development; Mr. Tan Khoon Hai, President of the Penang Chinese Town Hall; and many representatives of Chinese community organisations and the business community.
With a history spanning 151 years, the Penang Chinese Town Hall is one of Penang’s prominent Chinese community organisations and has been active in a wide range of areas, including Chinese education, cultural heritage and social welfare. The dinner included the unveiling of a commemorative plaque recognising contributors to the major renovation of the Town Hall building, which had not undergone extensive renovation for more than four decades. Mr. Tan stated that the Town Hall would continue to serve as a platform for interaction and dialogue among a broad range of stakeholders, encourage greater participation by younger generations, and preserve the culture and history of Penang’s Chinese community.
In her remarks at the event, Deputy Minister Lim stressed that the challenges facing Malaysia’s next generation lie not in competition among the country’s ethnic communities, but in artificial intelligence (AI), automation and an increasingly global market for talent. She emphasised the importance of safeguarding the rights of all communities while expanding economic, educational and employment opportunities rather than fostering mistrust among different ethnic groups.
Minister Steven Sim outlined the Government’s efforts to support Malaysian small and medium-sized enterprises in expanding into overseas markets, including a proposal to establish a dedicated “Malaysia Zone” on Chinese e-commerce platforms. He also stressed the importance of ensuring a fair competitive environment for domestic businesses and foreign e-commerce operators.
Finally, the Right Honourable Chow Kon Yeow highlighted the Penang Chinese Town Hall’s contributions to the community over the past 151 years through its activities in culture, education and charity, as well as its important role in bridging the Government and the community. He also outlined Penang’s efforts to move towards high-growth and high-value industries and to create more high-paying jobs through technological and industrial upgrading.
The dinner provided Mr. Machida with a valuable opportunity to deepen his understanding of the history and current activities of Penang’s Chinese community and to engage with Government and community representatives on the future economic and social development of Penang. The Consulate-General of Japan in Penang will continue to strengthen its engagement with the Penang Chinese Town Hall and a wide range of local stakeholders and, looking ahead to the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Malaysia and the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Consulate-General of Japan in Penang in 2027, will continue to promote friendship and exchanges between Japan and Penang.
