Consul-General Attends the Penang State Government’s Eight-Year Report Card Presentation

On September 12th, Mr. Shinya Machida, Consul-General of Japan in Penang, attended the Penang State Government’s Eight-Year Report Card Presentation held at Holiday Inn & Suites Penang Prai. The event was attended by YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang, members of the Penang State Executive Council (EXCO), State Assembly members, representatives of the State Government and local authorities, members of the business and industrial communities, universities, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), members of the diplomatic corps and other stakeholders, with approximately 500 participants in attendance.
At the event, Chief Minister delivered a presentation on the progress made by the Penang State Government over the past eight years under “Penang2030,” the State’s long-term vision launched in 2018. Using presentation slides and the Penang2030 Dashboard, he explained that Penang2030 is not an initiative to be pursued by the State Government alone, but a framework under which businesses, universities, schools, NGOs, local communities, and other stakeholders can each play their respective roles in contributing to Penang’s development.
The presentation covered a wide range of initiatives, including the digitalisation of State Government services, the development of digital learning facilities in 396 government schools across Penang, the expansion of Penang International Airport, the strengthening of air cargo and logistics capacity, the development of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system and the Penang Hill cable car, improvements in water supply capacity, climate change measures, support for the homeless and preparations for an ageing society. The Chief Minister also outlined plans to further promote high-value investment in the semiconductor sector, including integrated circuit (IC) design, as well as human resource development and the strengthening of the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises.
The Chief Minister also referred to areas in which targets have yet to be fully achieved, including agriculture and per-capita water consumption. He stressed that the work of government is never finished and that the event was not simply a celebration of the achievements of the past eight years, but an opportunity to review progress and consider the way forward. Noting that he has approximately two years remaining in his tenure as Chief Minister, he expressed his hope that the foundations laid thus far would be passed on to the next State leadership and that worthwhile initiatives under Penang2030 would continue in the years ahead.
The presentation provided a valuable opportunity to deepen understanding of the Penang State Government’s initiatives over the past eight years, as well as its thinking on the future development of the State’s economy and society. The Consulate-General of Japan in Penang will continue to maintain close communication and exchange views with the Penang State Government and other relevant stakeholders, and will make every possible effort to help create an environment in which Japanese nationals and Japanese companies can live and conduct their business activities smoothly, while further contributing to the development of Penang.
