Consul-General Visits Sunway University
2026/9/11
On September 11th, during his official trip to Kuala Lumpur, Mr. Shinya Machida, Consul-General of Japan in Penang, visited Sunway University in Selangor and exchanged views with Professor Wong Chin Huat on future exchanges between Japan and Malaysia, particularly Penang and Northern Malaysia.
Professor Wong is a political scientist with close ties to Penang, having worked at the Penang Institute for approximately 7 years from 2012 to 2019. He is currently involved in the activities of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), whose Asia headquarters is based at Sunway University, and also contributes to education, research and policy discussions on the SDGs and sustainable development through the Jeffrey Sachs Center on Sustainable Development.
During the meeting, Mr. Machida and Professor Wong discussed the importance of further strengthening intellectual exchanges between Japan and Malaysia, particularly Penang and Northern Malaysia, including exchanges among universities, researchers and academic institutions. They also shared the view that the long-standing relationship between Japan and Penang provides a strong foundation for expanding people-to-people exchanges involving researchers, universities and younger generations.
The visit also provided Mr. Machida with an opportunity to experience first-hand the distinctive Sunway ecosystem, in which education and research are closely connected with healthcare, commercial, transport, leisure and other functions. He was particularly impressed by the way education, research, daily life and business are organically linked within the wider Sunway environment. Mr. Machida also had a meal together with students on campus and enjoyed both the food and the lively atmosphere of university life.
The Consulate-General of Japan in Penang will continue to actively promote dialogue and intellectual exchanges with universities, researchers and other academic stakeholders, while making every effort to further strengthen friendship between Japan and Penang as well as Northern Malaysia.
