Consul-General Attends the Patron’s Night 2026 of the Majlis Dato’ Dato’ Negeri Pulau Pinang

On September 9th, Mr. Shinya Machida, Consul-General of Japan in Penang, attended the Patron’s Night 2026 organised by the Majlis Dato’ Dato’ Negeri Pulau Pinang. The event was attended by Tun Dato’ Seri Utama Ramli Ngah Talib, Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Penang, and his spouse, the Right Honourable Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang, and Dato’ Seri Choot Ewe Seng, President of the Majlis and President of the Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce, as well as members and past presidents of the Majlis and representatives of the Penang State Government. The Majlis brings together recipients of Penang State honours and undertakes various charitable, educational and community activities in addition to promoting fellowship among its members.
In his welcoming remarks, Dato’ Seri Choot Ewe Seng stressed that receiving a State honour is not only a great privilege but also carries a responsibility to continue serving society with integrity, humility and dedication. He highlighted the Majlis’ charitable programmes, visits to welfare homes and educational initiatives over the past year. Looking ahead to the Majlis’ 40th anniversary in 2027, he also expressed his hope that members would further strengthen their unity and build a lasting legacy for future generations.
In his address, Tun Dato’ Seri Utama Ramli Ngah Talib commended the Majlis for its contributions to society and highlighted the importance of education and nurturing the younger generation. Referring to rapid technological developments including AI and the Internet of Things, he emphasised the importance of enabling young people not only to use new technologies but also to become creators and leaders in emerging fields. He also encouraged the Majlis to utilise its networks and expertise to help narrow disparities in educational opportunities. The evening also featured the presentation of the Youth Excellence Award to two young recipients and the Golden Service Award in recognition of long-standing community service. Donations of RM10,000 each were presented to three charitable organisations, and the official logo commemorating the Majlis’ 40th anniversary in 2027 was launched.
Throughout the ceremony and dinner, Mr. Machida expressed his respect for the activities of the Majlis in his exchanges with the Yang di-Pertua Negeri and the Chief Minister, and had wide-ranging conversations with Dato’ Seri Choot Ewe Seng and other participants. The Consulate-General of Japan in Penang will continue to deepen its engagement with people and organisations contributing to the development of Penang and to further strengthen the friendship between Japan and Penang through cooperation in areas including youth development and community engagement.
