Consul-General’s Visit to GreatAsic Technology Sdn. Bhd.
2026/9/8
On September 8th, Mr. Shinya Machida, Consul-General of Japan in Penang, together with Mr. Hideyuki Yazama, Deputy Consul-General, visited GreatAsic Technology Sdn. Bhd., a semiconductor design company located in the Bayan Lepas Industrial Park, Penang, and exchanged views with Mr. Ong Chin Hu, CEO, and other representatives of the company. GreatAsic is a Malaysia-based IC design company specialising in custom ASIC and SoC (System on Chip) design and providing end-to-end semiconductor design services combining both hardware and software through to product development.
During the meeting, they exchanged views on the future of Malaysia’s semiconductor industry, particularly in Penang, the development of IC design talent, collaboration between universities and industry, and technological trends in semiconductor design. They also discussed the potential for technological and business collaboration with Japanese companies.
Mr. Machida noted that Penang and Northern Malaysia have long hosted many Japanese companies and developed a strong industrial base. He expressed his hope that cooperation between Japan and Malaysia would further expand not only in manufacturing, but also in such areas as semiconductor design, research and development, and human resource development.
The Consulate-General of Japan in Penang will continue to deepen its understanding of current economic and business developments in Penang and Northern Malaysia, including advanced industries, while making every possible effort to support stronger business linkages among Japan, Malaysia and Penang.
