Networking Meeting between Japanese and Malaysian Education Stakeholders ahead of the JAGAM Japan Education Fair 2026

On August 21st, Mr. Shinya Machida, Consul-General of Japan in Penang, hosted a networking meeting at his official residence for Japanese and Malaysian education stakeholders ahead of the “JAGAM Japan Education Fair 2026,” which was to be held in Penang on the following day, August 22nd. Participants included representatives of Japanese universities, high schools, vocational schools and Japanese-language schools, representatives of Malaysian universities and secondary schools, as well as members of the Japan Graduates’ Association of Malaysia (JAGAM) and its Northern Branch.
In his remarks, Mr. Machida explained that he had organised the meeting to create new connections between a broad range of Japanese educational institutions visiting Penang for the following day’s Japan Education Fair and local universities and secondary schools. He also expressed his respect for the longstanding efforts of JAGAM and its Northern Branch to promote study in Japan and educational and people-to-people exchanges between Japan and Malaysia, and encouraged the participants to use the opportunity for frank exchanges of views and to develop their new connections into concrete forms of cooperation.
During the meeting, representatives of Japanese universities, high schools, vocational schools and Japanese-language schools actively exchanged views with representatives of Malaysian universities and secondary schools on study in Japan, student exchanges, further study, and cooperation between universities and schools. JAGAM representatives, drawing on their own experiences of studying in Japan, highlighted the importance of ensuring that students and parents have access to reliable information. They also introduced the diverse educational opportunities available in Japan, including not only university education but also colleges of technology, vocational schools and professional education. Participants also exchanged views on the importance of further promoting two-way educational exchanges, including opportunities for Japanese students to study in Malaysia as well as for Malaysian students to study in Japan.
The Consulate-General hopes that the connections established through this meeting, together with the “JAGAM Japan Education Fair 2026” on August 22nd, will develop into concrete cooperation in such areas as student exchanges, further study, joint research, and cooperation between universities and schools. The Consulate-General will continue to work closely with JAGAM and other relevant organisations to further promote educational, cultural and people-to-people exchanges between Japan and Malaysia.
