Penang Bon Odori Festival 2026

On July 18, Mr. Shinya Machida, Consul-General of Japan in Penang, attended the Penang Bon Odori Festival 2026 held at the Esplanade (Padang Kota Lama), together with YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang State EXCO for Tourism & Creative Economy, and other distinguished guests. The festival is the largest Japanese cultural event in Penang, jointly organized by the Penang State Government, the Consulate-General of Japan, and Japanese-related organizations in Penang.
The stage featured a variety of performances, including the Miss Penang Bon Odori 2026 Finals, Bon Odori dance, Japanese taiko drumming, Soran Bushi dance, karate, and aikido demonstrations. Visitors also enjoyed traditional festival attractions such as goldfish scooping and yo-yo fishing, as well as a wide selection of Japanese food stalls.
The festivities were further enhanced by a spectacular fireworks display, which is a hallmark of Japan's summer festivals, and a lucky draw with a Honda motorcycle as the grand prize, creating a lively and festive atmosphere throughout the venue. The Consulate-General of Japan in Penang also hosted a cultural exchange booth, offering origami and kirigami workshops and displaying a variety of items introducing Japanese culture to visitors.
