Consul-General’s Attendance at the Welcome Dinner for the 17th Annual Conference of the Asian Criminological Society

On July 15th, Mr. Shinya Machida, Consul-General of Japan in Penang, attended the welcome dinner for the 17th Annual Conference of the Asian Criminological Society held in Penang.
The dinner was attended by YB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang, Consuls-General, representatives of the police and judicial sectors, members of academic institutions, and criminology researchers from across the Asia-Pacific region.
In his welcoming address, the Chief Minister stated that criminology plays an important role in crime prevention and in improving policing, criminal justice institutions, and public policy. He also highlighted the growing importance of cooperation among researchers, governments, and law enforcement agencies in responding to increasingly sophisticated and transnational crimes, including cybercrime, artificial intelligence-enabled fraud, financial scams, and transnational organised crime.
The Chief Minister further noted that Penang is a hub for education, research, and advanced industries and places importance on knowledge, collaboration, and evidence-based policymaking. He expressed his hope that the discussions at the conference would contribute to building safer and more peaceful societies in Asia and beyond.
Mr. Machida exchanged views with participating researchers, representatives of the police and judicial sectors, and members of academic institutions on criminology, responses to cybercrime and transnational crime, and academic exchanges between Japan and Malaysia. The Consulate-General, by getting connected to this kind of international cooperative framework of crime prevention, would like to further improve our capacity to deal with consular matters to protect Japanese nationals and their interests.
