2026/7/4
On July 4th, Mr. Shinya Machida, Consul-General of Japan in Penang, participated in George Town Heritage Celebrations 2026, held at various locations throughout the George Town World Heritage Site. The annual event commemorates George Town’s inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and featured a wide range of cultural performances, exhibitions and interactive programmes at historic buildings and public spaces.
At Seh Tek Tong Cheah Kongsi, Mr. Machida joined members of the Malaysian-Japanese Society (MJS) and Sakura-kai, the women’s section of the Penang Japanese Association, in performing “Ippome Ondo,” a song by the Japanese group AKB48, twice. The programme also featured performances representing the diverse cultures of Malaysia, Thailand and other countries, providing an opportunity for performers and visitors to enjoy cultural exchanges.
At another venue, Ms. Yamazaki, representative of the Pink Hibiscus Club, presented a kamishibai picture-story show introducing the relationship between Japan and Penang. With the World Heritage Site bustling with Malaysian visitors and international tourists, the event offered a valuable opportunity to appreciate how Japanese culture has been embraced as part of Penang’s rich cultural diversity.
The Consulate-General of Japan in Penang extends its warmest congratulations on the successful organisation of George Town Heritage Celebrations 2026. The Consulate-General will continue to work with the Japanese community and local organisations to further promote mutual understanding and friendship between Japan, Penang and Malaysia through cultural exchange.
