Penang Bon Odori Pop Up Festival 2026 at Gurney Paragon Mall
On June 20, Mr. Shinya Machida, Consul-General of Japan in Penang, attended the Penang Bon Odori Pop Up Festival 2026 at Gurney Paragon Mall. The event was organized by the Malaysian-Japanese Society and was attended by YB Connie Tan Hooi Peng, Member of the Penang State Legislative Assembly, Mr. Choo Shing Lai, President of the Malaysian-Japanese Society, and other distinguished guests.
The festival featured a wide variety of programs, including the preliminary round of the Miss Penang Bon Odori 2026 Contest, Bon Odori dancing, a karate demonstration, a yukata try-on experience, and a tuna-cutting show. Booths selling Japan-related products were also set up throughout the venue, attracting large crowds of visitors who enjoyed the festivities well into the evening.
The Consulate-General of Japan in Penang operated a cultural exchange booth, where visitors could participate in origami and kirigami workshops and view displays showcasing various aspects of Japanese culture.
