On September 22nd, Mr. Shinya Machida, Consul-General of Japan in Penang, who attended Chow Kong Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang, on his Japan visit to attend the Penang Week (September 22-26) at the Osaka-Kansai Expo, in addition to accompanying the Chief Minister on a tour of several pavilions including Japan Pavilion at the Expo, Mr. Machida paid a call upon Professor Yoshitada Morikawa and Professor Emeritus Tadashi Ito at the Graduate School of Engineering, Suita Campus, Osaka University, where they exchanged views on future academic exchanges between Japan and Malaysia. The university has a double degree program in engineering with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM); as similar national comprehensive universities, there is potential for expanding relations between these two Universities in the future. He also attended a meeting with the Chief Minister and his delegation and the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where he briefed the chamber officials on the current issues in Penang and Malaysia. On the 23rd, Mr Machida accompanied the delegation on a tour of the German, French, UAE, and Chinese pavilions, and also paid a courtesy call on Mr. Hiroyuki Ishige, Secretary General of the Expo Association. It was great that the Penang delegation was able to join the Expo, which is becoming increasingly lively as it approaches its finale.
