2025/7/21

On July 19, Mr. Shinya Machida, Consul General of Japan in Penang, attended the Penang Bon Odori Festival 2025 held at the Esplanade (Padang Kota Lama), together with YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang State EXCO for Tourism & Creative Economy, among other authorities. This festival is the largest Japanese cultural event organized in collaboration with the Penang State Government, Consulate-General of Japan, and the local Japan-related organizations.
Bon Odori dance, Japanese drums, soranbushi dance, shakuhachi and Japanese martial arts among others were performed on stage, and the venue featured goldfish scooping, yo-yo balloon fishing, a ghost house, as well as Japanese food. The event was also enlivened by the launching of fireworks, a summer tradition in Japan. The Consulate-General of Japan set up a cultural exchange booth, where origami and kirigami workshops were held and Japanese cultural items were displayed.
