Penang Bon Odori Festival 2024

On July 27, Penang Bon Odori Festival 2024 was held at the Esplanade (Padang Kota Lama), attracting tens of thousands of visitors until late at night. The festival is the largest Japanese cultural event held in collaboration with the Penang State Government and local Japan-related organizations. Consul General Kawaguchi and YB Wong Hong Wai, Penang State EXCO for Tourism & Creative Economy (PETACE), among others, attended the event.
Bon Odori dance, Miss Penang Bon Odori 2024, Japanese drums, “soranbushi” dance, and Japanese martial arts were performed on stage, and the venue featured goldfish scooping, yo-yo balloon fishing, a ghost house, as well as many booths of Japanese companies and Japanese food. The event was also enlivened by the appearance of Pikachu (Pokémon) and the launching of fireworks, a Japanese summer tradition. The Consulate-General of Japan set up a booth to conduct origami and kirigami workshops and display Japanese cultural items.
