The First Yosakoi Dance Online Workshop in Malaysia

Consul-General of Japan in Penang, Mr. Orikasa attended the first Yosakoi dance online workshop in Malaysia which was held on 18th December 2021.
This workshop was co-organized by Dream Yosakoi Festival Global Promotion Foundation and JAGAM Northern Branch supported by the Consulate General of Japan in Penang.
Dream Yosakoi Festival organized by Dream Yosakoi Festival Global Promotion Foundation was started in 2002. The Dream Yosakoi Festival is co-sponsored by Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Fuji TV and performed in Odaiba and Marunouchi, Tokyo. This festival was also held at Times Square in New York in 2013, Singapore in 2018. This is the first time Yosakoi dance workshop was held in Malaysia despite this pandemic period.
The first session was attended by high school teachers. Mr. Orikasa, Consul-General of Japan in Penang delivered his opening remarks and he hoped that the participating teachers who are Yosakoi dance instructors would learn and skill up Yosakoi Dance originated from Kochi Prefecture in Japan.
Director of Dream Yosakoi, Ms. Sentani Chisato conducted briefing on Yosakoi dance including the history of Yosakoi in Kochi Prefecture and quiz session for the teachers.
The second online workshop will be held on 29th January 2022. It will focus on how to dance Yosakoi dance step by step from the beginner’s level to professional level. The participating teachers will give a guidance to students on how to dance and lead to form a Japanese Yosakoi team in order to participate in the annual Yosakoi Parade in Georgetown, Penang.
This Yosakoi workshop is a good opportunity to work together regardless of nationality, language and culture. We hope to invite more students to participate and continue to promote international cultural exchange in order to contribute to regional development in Malaysia.
JAGAM Northern Branch Chairman, Mr. Shaun Chiam Khai Seong assured that JAGAM will continue to bridge Japan and Malaysia to enhance understanding and harmony between both countries through various means including this Yosakoi workshop.
