* The Consulate-General is accepting donations for relief efforts in response to the Great
East Japan Earthquake until 30th March 2012.

Around 14:46 of March 11, massive earthquakes with the magnitude
of 9.0 struck Sanriku, Japan. Waves of tsunami of up to more than
7m swept cities and villages of Tohoku district off the Pacific
Ocean, causing devastating human as well as physical damages. Tokyo
observed tremors with a seismic intensity of 5. But they inflicted
relatively modest damages. Aftershocks still persist, particularly
in Tohoku district.

2. Donations
We are grateful to the people of Malaysia for the kind assistance
and support. Please refer to the following if you would like to send
donations and other assistance to the Japanese earthquake victims.
It is possible to make direct donations to the Japanese Red Cross
or through the Malaysian Red Crescent or the special bank account
of the Consulate General of Japan at Penang.
Japanese Red Cross
Donations will be handed over to the local government
by the Japanese Red Cross and utilized by the local government
to assist the victims.

Special bank account of the Consulate-General of Japan at Penang
The Consulate General of Japan has established a special bank account
for receiving donations of support. The account is open till 30th
March 2012. Donations will be forwarded to the Japanese Red Cross
Society. Please note that the donations are NOT tax deductible.
Donations can be deposited at the account or sent by check to the Consulate-General of Japan.

4. Note: Chain mails about the Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake
With regard to the Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake, incorrect information has been spreading through chain mails, electronic bulletin boards and blogs.
Please check the authenticity of such information with authoritative information sources such as governmental websites and press reports, and do not allow incorrect information to cause anxiety among you.
To forward these chain mails will stir up unfounded fears among
people unnecessarily. When receiving such chain mails, kindly delete
them and don’t forward them.
